Behind the Bug: Why Did I Get Logged Out Randomly?

You’re using the app.

Everything is fine.

You switch tabs for two minutes, come back…

Excuse me?

I was literally just here.

You enter your password again. Carry on with your life.

Then it happens again.

Now you’re not using the app. You’re just repeatedly proving that you know your own password.

But why does this happen?

Getting logged out randomly can happen for a bunch of reasons.

Maybe your session expired.

Maybe the authentication server lost track of your session.

Maybe a token wasn’t refreshed properly.

Maybe the app updated in the background and killed your session.

Or maybe you opened the same account on another device and the system decided one of you had to go.

The user doesn’t know any of that.

They just see:

“Session expired.”

And think:

“What session? I was shopping.”

This is exactly why QA has to test more than the happy path.

What happens if the user stays inactive for 30 minutes?

What if they switch between the app and another app?

What if their internet disappears for a few seconds?

What if they log in from another device?

What if the session expires while they’re filling out a form?

What if they’ve spent 20 minutes entering information and suddenly get kicked out?

Because logging out isn’t always the problem.

Losing what the user was doing is.

Good QA asks the uncomfortable questions before the user does.

Because nobody wants to hear:

“Please log in again.”
